Mathews County History Featured by WAVY
A new exhibit brings the Battle of Cricket Hill and Gwynn’s Island story to life.
The Mathews Museum is honored to be featured by WAVY TV 10 as part of its Spirit of America: Celebrate 250 series.
The segment highlights the Museum’s newly constructed 6-foot by 6-foot Battle of Cricket Hill diorama, created by Mathews resident, model builder, reenactor, and Museum volunteer Don Good.
The diorama helps visitors visualize the July 1776 events around Cricket Hill, Milford Haven, and Gwynn’s Island, when Virginia militia forces under Gen. Andrew Lewis used artillery from Fort Cricket Hill on the mainland to force Lord Dunmore, Virginia’s last royal governor, to abandon Gwynn’s Island.
This local Revolutionary War story is an important part of Mathews County’s connection to the larger story of American independence. As Virginia and the nation prepare to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the exhibit offers visitors a vivid way to understand how events here in Mathews helped shape the future of Virginia.
We invite community members, families, students, history lovers, and visitors to come see the diorama in person at the Mathews Museum, located at 200 Main Street in Mathews.
The Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
